Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy

Cupping has been used for centuries as an ancient form of alternative medicine in China, Egypt, and the Middle East. During a cupping therapy session, your therapist puts special cups on your skin and leaves them there for a few minutes. These cups create suction, drawing our toxins from the body and promoting healthy blood flow. Cupping therapy is very effective for promoting an increase in circulation and to assist the body in healing injuries to muscles, tendons and joints. Cupping therapy can be very helpful in relieving tension caused by muscle hyper-tonicity and/or tightness in the surrounding connective tissue, i.e. fascia.

Cupping therapy is applied by creating suction, with the use of cups made of silicon, hard plastic or glass. A vacuum in the cup is created by squeezing the silicon cup, or by use of a pump, or in the can of glass cups with the use of a flame. The cups are placed on the skin over the targeted area and usually left in place for somewhere between five and fifteen minutes. Depending on the degree of suction, discoloration of the skin can occur as many have seen on the bodies of athletes and stars on TV. This discoloration is harmless and will resolve within a few days to sometimes 10 to 14 days.

Cupping therapy can be used in conjunction with Acupuncture and/or Massage Therapy to achieve relief of tension and promote healing in the muscles and connective tissue.

At Acu-Pain, Cupping therapy is used with silicon cups. They are applied in a gentle and effective method to produce a very relaxing and comfortable treatment.

We use Silicone Cups to promote circulation of Qi and Blood. Treatment is 20 to 30 minutes depending on what condition is being addressed. Cupping Decreases pain, tension and promotes circulation and relaxation.

How Cupping Supports Your Body

Injuries, stress, and everyday life can create imbalances in the body. Cupping removes stagnation and encourages the flow that helps correct those imbalances.

Patients will feel instant relief after a cupping session. You’ll also feel more energized, alert, and attuned. Some of the benefits of cupping include but are not limited to:

  • Detoxing tissues
  • Activating the lymphatic syste
  • Clearing veins, arteries, and capillaries
  • Clearing skin
  • Relaxing muscle tension
  • Unblocking blood flow
  • Balancing the nervous system
  • Musculoskeletal pain such as back pain/knee pain
  • Promoting cellular repair
  • Easing stiffness

What happens during a Cupping session

We place smooth warm cups, made of silicone or glass, on your skin along the body’s Acupuncture points. Then, we create a gentle suction that draws your skin upward into the cup.

At first, you’ll feel some tightness where the cups are. But, pretty soon, your body acclimates to the feeling of the cups and you probably won’t even feel that the cups are there. We leave these cups on for 5-20 minutes depending on what’s best for you.

Once we remove the cups, the pressure release will feel relaxing and soothing. A mild discolouration may occur from the cups which should disappear in a week or two.

Gua Sha

A traditional technique for modern practice.

‘Gua’ means scrape, and ‘Sha’ means sand,” Gua Sha uses a flat tool moving in one direction to relieve tension in the skin, muscles and fascia. To boost circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, encourage collagen production and stimulate the connective tissues that communicate with the nervous system. Some examples of what Gua Sha is used for include: cosmetic acupuncture facials, muscle and joint pain, respiratory infections, and neuralgia.
